Established in 2015 and located in Williamsville, NY, 12 Gates Brewing Company is an independent, craft-production brewery that produces high quality, hand crafted beers in a 30 barrel brewhouse. The brewery also features a taproom with 12 rotating taps (soon to be 18), light fare, outdoor seating, and live music.

12 Gates’ flagship beer is the well-known West Coast Style IPA, a dry citrus indulgence which leaves a clean palate. From traditional Pilsners to Double Stouts, the Brewing Company provides a range of styles that appeal to a wide range of consumers. The brewers tap into their Alchemic roots by experimenting with infusing new ingredients and flavors into the brewing process.

Beer is distributed in bars and restaurants throughout Western New York and select beers can be found on shelves of grocery stores and beer shops throughout Erie and Niagara County.

What’s the story behind your brewery’s name?

Honoring Sir George Ripley, 12 Gates Brewing Company is named after his work, “The Compound of Alchemy”, or the “Twelve Gates”. The corollary being that the Company’s brewing focuses on the alchemic process of fermentation, turning grain into gold.

Balance is the name of the game with a soft caramel malt body supported by a strong hop backbone, but one does not overpower the other. The Crystal and Munich malts nicely balance the Columbus and Summit hops. A nice dry hop of Columbus adds a fruity and spicy aroma and flavor including light citrus and black pepper. Under the Southern Cross IPA
Style: IPA - American
ABV: 7.0%
IBUs: 71
# Ratings: 782
Score: 3.78
Under the Southern Cross IPA blends the juicy, big hop flavor and bitterness of a classic West Coast IPA with the unique lime, tangelo, and stonefruit flavors and aromas of the new-to-market Waimea hops coming out of New Zealand. A crisp and clean grain bill accents the heavy late-addition and dry hopping that brings the full flavor and aromas of the Citra and Waimea hops, giving the drinker a punch of tropical citrus to the palate. This aggressively hopped IPA challenges the palate of the most seasoned of hop heads.

The Session IPA is the day-drinking IPA-drinker’s beer. Coming in just below 5% ABV this beer makes it absolutely ok to be drinking before noon any day of the week. While the Session IPA might be light in alcohol, it is far from light in flavor, with copious quantities of late-addition Equinox, Ella, and Rakau hops that compliment each other with mild notes of earthiness, alongside lime, orange, and orchard fruit notes.

Style: Witbier
ABV: 5.3%
IBUs: 20
# Ratings: 585
Score: 3.53
This is a somewhat classic Belgian Witbier, with the exception that it incorporates absolutely no wheat – how dare we! A complex grain bill using various unrefined malts, including oats and barley, as well as a considerable amount of rye malt provide a rich and spicy malt flavor to this light summer beer. Additions of sweet orange peel and coriander lend to the traditional sweet and spicy tasting notes common to this style.
Bleeding Heart Hoppy Red Rye
Style: Red Ale - American Amber / Red
ABV: 6.5%

# Ratings: 567
Score: 3.63
The Bleeding Heart Hoppy Red Rye is an ode to all you saps and lonely-hearted as you drown your sorrows and spew your disgust as your friends share couples dinners, spa retreats, and exchange their I love yous. And the roses, lets not get started on the roses. Instead tip a pint, or two, of this amber-red colored rye ale. It brings a delicious malt body with notes of caramel and toffee, a pronounced dry, spiciness characteristic of the rye malt, which compliments a piney, resinous hop profile, with mild notes of citrus playing in the background. What was the name of that holiday again? St. Patrick’s Day must be right around the corner.

Hops, hops, and more hops describe this bold Double IPA. Beginning with a strong but clean malt backbone we built the hops off of our love for, well, hops. Look for light fruit, resin, pine, with a wisp of spice. The aroma and flavor will change as the beer warms up to also reveal mint, pineapple, and citrus. Proceeds from the sales of this Double IPA will go to Ales for ALS education and research. Bronze Medal Winner – Raise a Glass International Beer Competition 2016

Common Reactor
Style: Cream Ale
ABV: 4.1%
# Ratings: 405

A darker version of a Cream Ale. The Common Reactor bridges the gap between pre-prohibition and the modern craft beer era. A hugely popular style originating in the Louisville Kentucky area that Prohibition almost killed off the style completely. Well, we brought it back. Look for a light and refreshing body, with a smooth but slightly grainy finish that is easily quaffable and enjoyable.
